Interests
I live on Flint Pond and am on a town committee to recover the pond. We have recvd $35k to treat the abundant lily pads and other weeds, but have a sizable water chestnut population as well-which the chemical treatment will not take care of. I'm here to drum up interest in the pond-new people and those who remember what it used to be like-formerly known for it's big bass, and they ARE still out there if you can get to them.
I am overseeing the water chestnut hand harvesting and am hoping to get some volunteers out here for 8/6 (8/7 raindate or as well if needed) 9-1 to hand harvest the water chestnuts. If we can't get them under control, you won't even be able to tell we treated the pond in a year or two as the chestnuts will just fill in where the water lilys were.
We have been delayed in treating the lily pads, this being state owned it takes a little longer. We still hope to do it this year (2016), but are actively pulling the water chestnuts all summer.
Those of you who've been here know there are only a few homes actually on the pond (14) so it is more work than the neighborhood can do on their own. Flint Pond is a state owned wildlife management area, owned specifically by Div F&W, 61-acres. There is a public boat launch that the state says can fit 20 cars, currently storing some gravel for our sewerline project so would hold less. If you have any free time the morning of 8/6, please consider coming to help for even just an hour.
